If You Want It, Give It!

Have you ever heard the saying “If You Want It, Give It?” I am sure your parents or someone in your life has said something similar such as “scratch my back and I’ll scratch yours.” I have said that very saying a time or two growing up. My dad would get an itch in a hard to reach spot on his back and me being daddy’s little girl I would always run to the rescue.
The first time my daddy scratched my back in return was probably the biggest mistake he ever made! I wanted him to scratch my back all the time after that. I quickly caught onto the “I’ll scratch your back if you scratch mine” technique.
Even into my adulthood my mindset was “Scratch my back and I’ll scratch yours.” I think this is how a huge percentage of society thinks in today’s society. The rest, well they just want what they can get with out giving anything in return. Sadly, we have it all wrong. It shouldn’t be “scratch my back and I’ll scratch yours”, no it should be more like “if you want it, give it.” That’s it. Simply give it first.
If You Want It, Give It First!
If you want it, give it first it is really that simple. I was reading my daily devotion back in November and there was a story that touched my heart. It was a story of how a man went to Mother Teresa and told her about a family of eight who have not eaten for a week. Mother Teresa immediately took the family a bag of rice.
The inspiring part of this story is what the mother of the starving children did next. She kept half the bag of rice for her children and took the other half to her neighbor. When she returned Mother Teresa asked her where she had went with the rice. The mother of the starving children replied “To my neighbors house; they too are hungry.”
Could she have kept the entire bag of rice for her family? Absolutely! However, the mother knew that by giving and putting others first there would be more food to come.
I hope this story has touched you like it has me. The next time you want something I hope that this story comes to mind. Ask yourself “What can I give?” Don’t expect anything in return when giving just give from the heart and you will be amazed what you may receive in return.
So if you want it, give it, why? Because giving is the key to blessings. Just keep this in mind:
- If you want to give to others do it with a sincere and grateful heart.
- What you sow you reap. If you sow a small seed you may reap a small harvest.
Find something greater than your own self-interest, give it what you can and you will discover your limitations and God’s blessing when you focus on giving what you have instead of what do not have. If You Want It, Give It!
